LORENA — Playing without a pair of starters, the Brownwood Lions still managed a comfortable road victory over the Lorena Leopards, 61-40, Friday night.

Minus Isyah Campos and A.J. McCarty in the lineup, the Lions (19-4) led Lorena (5-16) by just one point, 14-13, after one quarter, then limited Lorena to one point in the second period en route to a 29-14 halftime edge. Through three periods, Brownwood owned a 48-22 advantage.

“Not having two starters, the bench played really well,” said Lions head coach Nadir Dalleh. “I was really proud of the way we handled their defense. We have one more game to prepare for district and we still have to clean up some things, but I'm proud of where we are.”

Zach Strong paced the Brownwood offensive attack with 17 points trailed by John Wilhelm with 12, Beau Bronniman with nine, Brandon Hamrick with four and Drew Huff, Josh Baucom and Darrell Williams each with three points.

The Lions visit Eula at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the non-district finale. Brownwood begins defense of its District 7-4A championship on Jan. 21 at Stephenville, which beat the Lions, 57-56, at the Dublin tournament on Dec. 6.
