ABILENE — After forcing their second overtime game in the last three outings Thursday night at McMurry, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets proved no match for the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys Saturday afternoon, suffering a 106-58 defeat.

The loss was the 12th in a row for the Yellow Jackets (1-13, 0-5), who remained winless in American Southwest Conference action. Howard Payne's lone win this season occurred Nov. 15 at Texas Lutheran.

Saturday's victory was the first in conference play for Hardin-Simmons (5-9, 1-4), which ended a three-game drought of its own.

The Yellow Jackets — who trailed 48-28 at halftime — knocked down 30 percent (21 of 69) of their shots and only 19 percent (3 of 16) of their three-pointers, to go along a 65 percent (13 of 20) effort at the free throw line. HPU also coughed up 22 turnovers and was outrebounded, 48-46.

Jase Miguez finished with 13 points for Howard Payne followed by seven apiece from Joshua Taylor and Jayden Modrall, six each from Tyrell Thompson and Talen Davis, four apiece from Jaylan Ballou and Colton Otts, three each from Mason Green, Kyle Kildare and Isiah Thomas, and two points from Brad Erskin.

Hardin-Simmons drilled 50 percent (41 of 82) of its field goals, with 13 buckets coming from three-point land. The Cowboys also sank 73 percent (11 of 15) of their free throws.

Layton Sharp led the HSU attack with 16 points trailed by 14 from Aidan Walsh, 13 each from Neal Chambliss and Trey Wooldridge and 12 points from Kyle Brennon.

The Yellow Jackets will attempt to end their losing streak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday as they travel to ASC East leader East Texas Baptist (11-2, 4-0), a 74-58 winner over Ozarks Saturday.
