MARSHALL — The woes continued for the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets Thursday night as they suffered their 13th consecutive loss and remained winless in American Southwest Conference action with a 104-79 road defeat against the East Texas Baptist Tigers.
The Yellow Jackets (1-14, 0-6) trailed 50-26 at halftime after being down just 17-14 with 12:40 left in the first half. The Tigers' (12-2, 5-0) lead reached double figures, 27-16, on a three-point play by Jayden Williams at the 9:01 mark, hit 15 points, 33-18, on a layup by Jarell Taylor at 6:16, and grew to 20 points, 44-24, on a free throw by Landin Brown with 2:16 to go.
In the second half, ETBU's lead eclipsed 30 points, 64-33, on a layup by Chris Haynes just 3:57 after the break. The Tigers' advantage peaked at 35 points, 81-46, with 11:15 to go after a free throw by Williams.
Howard Payne sank 49 percent (30 of 61) of its shots, 33 percent (7 of 21) of its three-pointers and 80 percent (12 of 15) of its free throws. But the Yellow Jackets were outrebounded 40-35 and committed 23 turnovers that led to 25 points. HPU forced just 10 turnovers that resulted in six points.
Jase Miguez led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points followed by 11 from Colton Otts, nine from Evan Adkins, eight each from Javaris Jones and Joshua Taylor, seven from Eliajah Pruitt, five from Jaylan Ballou, three from Jayden Modrall, and two points from Brad Erskin.
East Texas Baptist drained 51 percent (39 of 77) of its field goals, 29 percent (10 of 35) of its treys, and 73 percent (16 of 22) of its free throw attempts.
Ahmad Caldwell led the Tigers with 17 points trailed by Haynes with 12.
The Yellow Jackets will seek their first ASC victory, and first win since Nov. 15 at Texas Lutheran, when they visit LeTourneau (9-4, 2-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
