SALADO — In their first action since opening weekend two full weeks ago, the Brownwood Lady Lions soccer team finished second at the Salado tournament, which wrapped up Saturday.

Following Thursday's opening 2-1 victory over Pleasanton, the Lady Lions followed with wins of 6-0 over Splendora and 3-1 over Bay City Friday to advance to Saturday's championship game. There, the Lady Lions fell short against host Salado by a 2-1 count.

In the 6-0 win over Splendora, Aleyia Cotton tallied two goals along with one each by Watts Jones, Landry Walker, Armani Lopez and Ataleigh Constancio. Jones also finished with two assists while Walker added one.

Against Bay City, Cotton added two more goals while Kennedi Johnson contributed one. Jones dished out an assist.

In the finale against Salado, Cotton scored on an assist from Jones for the Lady Lions' lone goal.

“I thought everyone really stepped up into their roles on the field and owned it,” said Lady Lions head coach Andrew Stevenson. “The progress that we've made from the Liberty Hill tournament to this one is huge and that's what we have to focus on. It was a tough loss today to a good team but we made progress. We still have the whole season in front of us and I'm excited to see what we can do.”

The Lady Lions (4-3-1) play their first home game of the season at 5 p.m. Tuesday as they welcome La Vega. Kennedale will then invade Gordon Wood Stadium at 5 p.m. Friday.
