SPRINGTOWN — The Brownwood Lions soccer team notched its first win of the season in the second of three games at the Springtown tournament over the weekend.
The Lions posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Fort Worth Dunbar Friday, which followed a 5-0 loss to Decatur Thursday. Brownwood then fell to host Springtown, 3-1, on Saturday.
In the victory over Fort Worth Dunbar, the Lions scored both their goals before halftime. Blake Brasher found the net with an assist from Caleb Nelson, while Tony Valenciano followed with a goal thanks to help from Aden Solis.
“The first goal came off a nice header from Brasher off a corner kick by Nelson,” Swanzy said. “The second goal was a through ball from Solis to Valenciano.
“Defensively, we were able to shut them out despite several opportunities to score that didn't transpire. I'm very proud of the effort and heart of these boys. They deserve to win because they work hard.”
The tournament began with a 5-0 loss to Decatur, the Lions' fifth straight setback to start the season. Brownwood surrendered all five goals in the opening half.
In the finale against Springtown, the Lions fell behind 2-0 at halftime, but traded goals with the host Porcupines in the second half as Nelson scored on a corner kick with no assist.
“This was certainly a winnable game and I hate to let those go,” Swanzy said. “We started with a tough wind in our face and had a defensive breakdown on the first goal, then the ball popped away from our goalie and was put in by their forward for the second. It was a very physical game and we bodied one of their players in the box which led to a PK and the third goal.”
“We'll get back to work on Monday and get ready for San Angelo Lake View.”
The Lions (1-6) are back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday against San Angelo Lake View at Old Bobcat Stadium.
