The Center for Life Resources hosted the Winter Ball on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Aldersgate for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Amber Lewis, Chief of IDD Service Coordination, was approached back in October about a ball or prom for those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

“Several people from the IDD community in Brownwood wanted to host a special night for those with disabilities,” Lewis said.

Lewis stated she had three goals for the event — to create a memorable night for individuals with disabilities; to create awareness in our communities about individuals with IDD; and to educate those in our community about services for individuals with disabilities.

“I believe I achieved all of my goals and more through the IDD Winter Ball,” Lewis said. “It was truly such an amazing event not only for individuals with disabilities, but for our entire community.”

Janie Clements Industries, CFLR Provider (HCS, TXHML, ICF); Aldersgate Enrichment Center, EduCare Community Living, The Company of Rock House; and Daybreak Community Services also contributed in various ways to make the event possible, Lewis said.

“We asked for formal clothing donations from the community to help dress some of our individuals,” Lewis said. “We had a wonderful turn out with over 60 dresses donated and around 35 men's shirts and ties. The best experience of this was having women try on dresses and ask if they got to keep the dress. Their face lit up when they learned they get to keep the beautiful dress. It was an amazing experience.”

If you have any questions regarding services for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities please contact Center For Life Resources IDD Intake Department at 325-646-9574.

"The one piece of advice of I would like to give family members is please do not wait to seek services or resources for your loved one as the time is now,” Lewis said.
