The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets wrapped up the 2019-20 basketball season with an 87-81 loss to the Concordia Tornadoes Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets finished with a 2-23 overall record and 1-15 mark against American Southwest Conference opponents. Howard Payne played its last four games at the Coliseum, snapping a 20-game skid during the home stand.
Concordia (12-13, 7-9) will move on the ASC tournament and represent the West Division as the No. 2 seed. The Tornadoes face East No. 3 seed East Texas Baptist (19-6, 12-4) at noon Thursday at Sul Ross – the ASC West champion.
Howard Payne shot better than Concordia in every aspect, but 30 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets resulted in 25 points for the Tornadoes.
The Yellow Jackets hit 47 percent (25 of 53) of their shots, 42 percent (10 of 24) of their three-pointers and 63 percent (21 of 33) of their free throws, while owning a 41-36 edge in rebounds.
Concordia sank 43 percent (28 of 65) of its field goal attempts, 36 percent (9 of 25) of its treys and 61 percent (22 of 36) of its free throws.
Eleven Tornadoes scored, led by Philip Meikle with 19 points and Zaid Harris 14 points.
The Yellow Jackets received a game-high 21 points from Jase Miguez trailed by Jacob Smith with 13, Jaylan Ballou with 10, Joshua Taylor with nine, Luke Cox with eight, Tyrell Thompson with seven, Jayden Modrall with six, Evan Adkins with four, and Talen Davis with three points.
Down 40-39 at halftime, Howard Payne surrendered the first five points of the second half and never got closer than two possessions behind the rest of the way. The Tornadoes' lead reached double figures, 54-44, with 13:22 left after a trey by Meikle.
Concordia's lead peaked at 11 points, 77-66, after another Meikle three-pointer with 5:42 to go. The Yellow Jackets did close the gap to four points, 79-75, on a Modrall free throw with 3:16 remaining, but Concordia tallied the next four points to stretch the advantage to 83-75 with 1:42 left on the clock.
