LONGVIEW — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets suffered their second straight American Southwest Conference softball series sweep over the weekend, and their losing streak hit eight games following three losses at LeTourneau.
Howard Payne dropped both games of a Friday doubleheader, 9-1 and 4-3, and was dealt a 9-1 defeat in Saturday's series finale.
In Howard Payne's 4-3 loss Friday, the Lady Jackets (3-9, 0-6) overcame a 3-0 deficit — allowing two runs in the first inning and another in the second — with three runs in the top of the fifth. LeTourneau (9-3, 5-1), however, broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with the decisive run.
Down 3-0, HPU's fifth inning featured a one-out double down the left field line by Tonya Thompson followed by an RBI double in the same location by Aurora Luera. After stealing third, Luera scored on an RBI single to left field by Kiley Person. Person stole second and third base to move into position to score on Alexis Sullivan's RBI sacrifice fly to center field, which evened the score at 3.
In the bottom of the fifth, however, Emilee Anderson led off with a double to left field then Ethel Warren followed with an RBI single to right field for the final run of the game.
Hannah Morales was tagged with the loss, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Zalayna Perez started and gave up three runs on five hits with one strikeout over three frames.
The Lady Jackets finished with seven hits — two each by Sullivan and Kayla Hill and one apiece from Luera, Person and Thompson.
The series began with the Lady Jackets on the wrong end of a 9-1 blowout.
Howard Payne surrendered three runs apiece in each of the first three innings, while scoring its lone run in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Jackets tallied just two hits — both singles by Hill. HPU's lone run in the fourth was the result of a Hill single and a two-out error that allowed Tori Muro to reach and Melinda Mendoza — running for Hill — to score.
In the circle, Tia Campos yielded eight runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk in two innings, while Olivia Rivera gave up a run on two hits with three strikeouts in two innings.
Saturday's game saw HPU yield four runs in the bottom of the first inning and trail 5-0 before scoring its lone run in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Jackets were limited to four hits — singles by Person, Sullivan, and Ragen Noriega, while Rivera belted a one-out solo home run in the fourth for HPU's only run.
In the circle, Campos, Morales and Bree Cason combined to allow seven earned runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Howard Payne hosts UT-Dallas Friday and Saturday in another three-game ASC series. The first two contests will take place beginning at 1 p.m. Friday with the finale at noon Saturday.
