LIBERTY HILL — The Brownwood Lions returned to the win column in their finale at the Liberty Hill tournament Saturday night, defeating the Austin InterScholastic Baseball League Waves, 5-2.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and added two more runs in the second, then tacked on their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Brownwood gave up single runs in the second and seventh frames.
At the plate, Kris Hobbs, Trynten Slaughter and Mason Ryden accounted for the Lions' three hits, while Landon Harris drove in two runs and Hobbs and Slaughter added an RBI apiece. Hobbs, Reece Rodgers and Isaac Pena drew two walks drew two walks as well.
On the mound, Harris tossed 6.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with 17 strikeouts and two walks. Jakob Hataway recorded the final out after yielding a run on no hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Brownwood's defense committed three errors.
In the first inning, Hobbs walked with two outs ahead of an RBI double by Slaughter. Hataway then walked before Jakob Dorsett reached on an error that allowed Slaughter to come home.
In the second inning, Pena and Rodgers walked ahead of an RBI ground out by Harris that plated Pena, then Hobbs singled home Rodgers.
Brownwood's final run in the sixth inning was the result of a leadoff walk by Pena, who stole second and third base ahead of Harris' RBI ground out.
The Lions (3-6) will visit Taylor at 2 p.m. Tuesday then take part in the Boyd tournament Thursday through Saturday. Brownwood faces Aubrey at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Graham at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Boyd at 6 p.m. Friday, and Bridgeport at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
