The Howard Payne soccer program completed its most successful weekend of its second season, earning a victory and two ties in four American Southwest Conference matches at Citizens National Bank Field.

The Lady Jackets picked up their first win of the year on Friday with a 1-0 shutout over East Texas Baptist, then played LeTourneau to a 1-1 tie Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets rebounded from Friday’s 2-1 overtime loss to ETBU with a 2-2 Saturday tie against LeTourneau.

In the Lady Jackets’ (1-6-1, 1-3-1) victory, Diana Bolanos recorded the game’s only goal — unassisted — just 5:12 into the contest. Bolanos attempted two shots on goal, as did Liz McDonald-Smith.

The Lady Jackets’ defensive effort was sparked by goal keeper Nicole Pena, who recorded nine of Howard Payne’s 10 saves. Attempting shots on goals for the Lady Tigers (2-7-2, 1-4) were Brittany Rosales, Rachel Hastie and Jacqui Saling with two each, and Kelli Kincaid, Jessica Hughes, Lindsey Brusen and Zane Gruznina with one apiece.

Saturday’s tie with LeTourneau (3-8-1, 1-5-1) saw McDonald-Smith stake the Lady Jackets to 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 14:54 into the game.

But LeTourneau responded at the 31:44 mark when Kelly Crommelin scored on a corner kick.

Pena recorded four saves for the Lady Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets (1-7-1, 0-4-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over LeTourneau Saturday, but the visitors rallied with one goal in each half.

Chris Martinez scored a one-on-one goal with an assist from Wilfredo Larios 4:59 into the game, while Malcolm Wentworth’s bicycle kick at the 21:59 juncture upped Howard Payne’s advantage to 2-0.

But LeTourneau (3-6-2, 3-2-1) answered with a Norman Fleet header off a corner kick with 2:39 left in the first half, then Daniel Iya’s goal, with an assist from Godfrey Higgs, created the tie at the 60:40 mark.

Malcolm Framjee recorded all six of the Yellow Jackets’ saves.

Against ETBU (5-3-1, 4-1), Howard Payne got on the board first as Larios scored an unassisted goal at the 18:48 mark.

ETBU answered late in the first half as Erik Romero found the net with 2:57 remaining before intermission.

In the extra session, Casey Sowells fed Juan Olua for the game-winning goal 98:49 after the match started.

Framjee recorded all eight Howard Payne saves as ETBU took 22 shots. The Yellow Jackets attempted 14.

Isaac Hawkins attempted three shots on goal for Howard Payne, while Martinez attempted one.

Romero led the Tigers with three shots on goals while Sowells and David Zaldivar had two shots on goal each. Chris Dier and Chad Monk also had one shot on goal apiece.

The Jackets and Lady Jackets will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Austin to face Concordia in an ASC doubleheader. The women’s game will begin the action at 6 p.m.
