Bulletin Staff Report
LUBBOCK — The Brownwood Lady Lions reached Saturday’s consolation championship game and finished with three wins in five contests at the 49th annual Caprock Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Following a 63-43 loss to Lubbock Cooper on Thursday, the Lady Lions went on to defeat Lubbock High, 48-36, and Odessa Permian, 52-42, on Friday.
Those victories put the Lady Lions in the consolation championship of the green bracket, where they were upended by Wolfforth Frenship, 48-40, on Saturday.
“It’s a tough tournament, one of the best in the state, and I thought we competed well,” said Lady Lions head coach Nikki Heath. “I think it’s really going to help us get ready for district because we had to be ready to play game in and game out.
“We would have liked to have won from the get-go and been in the winners’ bracket, but we came back and played strong. The teams we lost to were great teams.”
In the win over Odessa Permian late Friday night, LaCresha Williams led Brownwood with 16 points, followed by 10 from Gabby Colbert, seven from Hailey Williams, six from Alex Williams, four each from Shalisa Hall and Moochie Galloway and two points from Stephanie Jordy.
In Saturday’s loss to Frenship, LaCresha Williams again tallied 16 points, followed by eight from Colbert, six each from Alex Williams and Hailey Williams, four points from Galloway and two points from Jordy.
The Lady Lions (10-11) will return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when they visit Copperas Cove in the District 16-4A opener. Cove (17-3) is coming off a 61-55 loss to Harker Heights in the final of its own tournament.
