The Brownwood Lions’ bid for a three-game win streak was ruined by the Abilene High Eagles Tuesday night as they picked up a 2-0 victory in only their second match of the season.

Due to winter weather conditions, Abilene High had a total of eight matches cancelled in the past couple of weeks, and appeared extremely fired up to get the chance to finally take the field again, according to Lions head coach Mitch Moore.

“We were a tad bit slower than they were tonight,” Moore said. “We usually play at a higher level and a lot faster. We played fairly well, we just weren’t real smooth.”

Moore stated the Lions (3-3-1) matched the Eagles’ energy level for the first 15 minutes, but Abilene High began to take control and converted its first goal 23 minutes into the first half.

With Abilene on the attack for most of the rest of the half, the Lions were able to deny the Eagles a second first-half goal.

But Abilene scored again midway through the second half on a defensive breakdown by the Lions.

“We left a guy unmarked right in front of the goal and he had an easy shot,” Moore said.

The Lions will attempt rebound at the Round Rock tournament, which begins Thursday. Brownwood will open with Round Rock McNeil, then play Austin St. Stephen’s and Fossil Ridge Friday. The Lions’ pool play performance will determine who they play on Saturday.
