MARSHALL — Trailing by 10 points with 7:09 remaining, the No. 10 Howard Payne Lady Jackets stormed back and remained undefeated with a 69-63 victory over the East Texas Baptist Lady Tigers Monday in American Southwest Conference action.

Howard Payne (4-0, 2-0) held off winless LeTourneau, 58-51, this past Saturday, and labored through its second straight outing after opening the season with a pair of double-digit victories over UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas, which entered the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

The Lady Jackets, who trailed by as many as a dozen points — 51-39 — with 11:07 to go, led for a grand total of four minutes and 40 seconds Monday night. But Howard Payne outscored ETBU 18-4 over the final 5:04 to complete its comeback. HPU’s last lead of 12-11 had occurred with 14:10 left in the first half prior to Clarissa Krum’s go-ahead three-pointer with 1:21 left.

Krum led the Lady Jackets with 18 points and four three-pointers, trailed by Hope Hohertz with 11 points and seven rebounds and Roshonda Gayden with 11 points and four boards. Also scoring were Katy Sarem with nine points, Elaine Hobbs with eight, and Tiffany Warner and Brittany Zamora with six points apiece.

East Texas Baptist (2-2, 1-1) received 12 points from Ruth Stewart, 11 from Satara Harrell and 10 from Emily Leek.

Down 57-47, the Lady Jackets’ rally began with a three-pointer by Krum at the 6:49 juncture. Another trey from Krum reduced the deficit to 59-54, and ETBU clung to a 61-56 edge before the Lady Jackets made their biggest charge.

Two free throws each from Hobbs and Zamora closed the gap to 61-60 with 1:56 left, then Krum drained the go-ahead three just 35 seconds later.

Zamora added two more free throws to boost the lead to 65-61 with 43 seconds left, and Stewart scored ETBU’s last points on a deuce with 22 seconds remaining.  

In the first half, HPU was behind by as many as eight points, trailing 32-24 with 1:09 left following a three-pointer by Kelsey Harris.

Krum closed the gap to 32-26 on a jumper with 1:01 left in the half, then Hohertz drilled a three-pointer with 32 seconds left to trim the halftime deficit to 32-29.

Howard Payne allowed the game’s first five points, but answered with a 10-0 spurt over a 2:15 stretch to grab a five-point lead. Sarem drained a pair of three-pointers and sank two free throws during the run, while Hohertz contributed a bucket.

Tied at 15-all at the 9:32 mark following a three-pointer by Warner, the Lady Jackets fell victim to a 6-0 run and never led again in the first half. Howard Payne did trim the deficit to 21-20 with 7:15 left on a three-point play by Gayden, but ETBU answered with an 11-4 surge.

Howard Payne will open its home schedule at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when it hosts University of the Ozarks in ASC action.
