EARLY - The Rangers of Brownwood will be one of the 14 teams competing in the TTAB Freshman Open Base state tournament following their 4-0 victory over the Brownwood Twins in the finals of the District 3 tournament Wednesday at the Early City Park.

The state tournament begins on Monday, July 28 in New Boston.

The Rangers blew the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Justin Osteen started the inning with a single, then Matthew Gomez reached on an error. With one out, Seth Owen reached base on another Twin error, which allowed both Gomez and Justin Howard - who was courtesy running for the pitcher Osteen - to score.

Cutter Brewer, who finished 3-for-3, followed with an RBI single to right-center field that knocked in Owen with the fourth Rangers run.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Osteen and Gomez drew one-out walks.

With the runners on second and third, Gomez’s large lead off drew a throw and he eventually got into a run down. During the run down, Howard — who again was running for Osteen - scored on the play. Gomez was also safe at third base on the play, but was left stranded.

On the mound, Osteen went the distance for the Rangers and struck out seven without giving up a hit.

The only Twins to reach base were Garret Barnum on an error and Kade Miller on a walk in the first inning.

Tyler Seymore pitched all six innings for the Twins and surrendered five hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Brewer’s three hits led the Rangers, followed by one from Osteen and one from Colt Evetts.
