The Brownwood Astros’ season came to its conclusion at the hands of the Clifton White Sox, 13-3, in a TTAB Junior Midgets state tournament elimination game at the Camp Bowie Sports Complex Wednesday.

The White Sox then went on to defeat the Clifton Red Sox, 5-4, late Wednesday night, and will battle the Troup Rattlers at noon today. The winner of that game will face the Brownwood Cardinals in the state championship game at 6 tonight.

The Astros surrendered the game’s first six runs, but were able to cut Clifton’s lead in half, 6-3, with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and one more in the fourth.

In the third, Dylon Sharp and Caydon Vara reached on consecutive one-out walks. Leadoff batter Xavier Porter then doubled down the right field line, which brought home Sharp and Vara and cut Clifton’s lead to 6-2.

In the third, Caleb Hernandez led off with a triple, then scored on an RBI infield single by Stetson Bomar.

Clifton, however, put the game away in the bottom of the fourth as it scored seven runs to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.

Jayson Shanefelt, Hutch Kettler, Brayden Morrow and Dalton Ross collected consecutive RBI base hits to close the game.

Earlier in the fourth, Morrow walked and scored on an error; Ross reached on an error and scored on a passed ball; and Jake Woosley walked and scored on a passed ball.

Clifton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first thanks to RBI base hits by Shanefelt, Kettler, Morrow and Ross. Kettler also scored in the second after tripling with one out.
