BURLESON - The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions, under the direction of new head coach Mark Davis, opened the fall tennis season with a 10-9 win at Class 5A Burleson Saturday.
Brownwood was carried by its boys singles play, as the Lions won all six matches that counted toward the final score.
Picking up singles wins were No. 1 Will Thomas (8-3 over Stephen Huschka), No. 2 Luis Vallecillo (7-5, 6-4 over Kota Tingle), No. 3 Steven Pinkard (6-2, 6-0 over John Samuel), No. 4 Ryan Barkley (6-1, 6-1 over Mason Gregory), No. 5 Brandon Thompson (6-3, 6-1 over Sam Unkart) and No. 6 Bubba Vannoy (6-2, 6-1 over Jonathan Houghton).
The Lions also added victories in two of three doubles matches as the No. 1 team of Vallecillo and Thomas knocked off Huschka and Samuel, 6-1, 6-2, while the No. 3 team of Vannoy and Thompson downed Unkart and Houghton, 6-3, 6-0.
The Lady Lions contributed two points to the team victory as No. 2 singles player Julia Arledge tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maegan Samuel.
Arledge teamed with Isle Rincon in the No. 1 doubles match to earn a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Kasey Matejka and Samuel.
In mixed doubles action, Veronica Cadena and Steven White tallied a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory for Brownwood.
Also competing for the Lady Lions in singles action were No. 1 Joan Burks (three-set loss to Matejka), No. 3 Andrea Leonard (two-set loss to Joricyn Webb), No. 4 Sophia Chaput (two-set loss), No. 5 Kathryn Priddy (two-set loss) and No. 6 Rincon (two-set loss).
The Lady Lions’ doubles team of Burks and Leonard in the No. 2 spot, and Chaput and Priddy in the No. 3, lost in three sets and two sets, respectively. The Lions’ No. 2 boys doubles team of Pinkard and Barkley also took a two-set loss.
Brownwood players who picked up victories in additional matches that did not count toward the team point total included White (10-1), Kevin Bostick (10-8 over Matt Castillo), Darren Ridley (10-3 over Trevor Hefner) and Shasta Pruett (10-6 over Lauren Royen).
Double victories were earned by the teams of Ridley and Andrew Harding (6-2, 6-0), Bostick and Ronnie Evans (6-4, 6-0) and Presley Parker and Raylene Camp (6-2, 6-4).
