BRECKENRIDGE - The Brownwood Lions varsity cross country team qualified for the Region I-3A meet by placing third at the District 2-3A meet here Monday.

The feat may be a first in the history of the Lions cross country program, which just a short few years ago didn’t have enough runners to qualify as a team at district meets.

“We probably had the most kids of all the schools there,” said Brownwood cross country coach Shane Perkins. “It wasn’t long ago we had a hard time trying to find kids to run. But this is a great testament to our kids and how much they like to compete. I’m proud of them.”

The top three teams and top 10 individuals from the district earned spots in the regional meet at Lubbock on Saturday, Nov. 8. The top three teams and top 10 individuals at regionals will then move on to the state meet Saturday, Nov. 15 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Brownwood finished with 72 points, which trailed Graham (26) and Abilene Wylie (32), but beat out host Breckenridge (99).

The Lions were led by Patrick McLaughlin, who placed 10th overall with a time of 18:01. Anthony Delgado (19:11) came in 15th place, followed by Cameron McLaughlin (18th place, 19:22), Garrett Wells (21st place, 19:37), Josh Reece (23rd place, 19:40), Luis Vallecillo (24th place, 20:13) and Kindry Kirbo (33rd place, 23:00).

“Of our top seven, we have three freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and two seniors, so we’re still pretty young,” Perkins said. “We’ve also got some kids on the JV team that had some good times and might move up to varsity for the regional meet.”

The JV Lions came in second with 31 points, trailing only Graham’s 26-point total.

Bryan Justice led the way with a 20:11 time, which was good for third place, followed by Johnny Ortega (fifth place, 20:53), Arnulfo Hernandez (sixth place, 20:54), Colt Waddle (eighth place, 21:16), William Reece (ninth place, 21:17), Cody Snyder (10th place, 21:19), Jarrod Tipton (11th place, 21:19), Adrian Cortez (14th place, 222:15), Kevin Bostick (15th place, 22:49), Jeremy Bartley (17th place, 23:42), Steve Romero (20th place, 25:15) and Jakob Morris (22nd place, 27:36).

Brownwood did not have a girl compete in the varsity girls portion of the meet, but two took part in the JV girls run.

Aranda Salazar came in seventh place with a time of 15:52, while Kumar Douglas finished 19th with a 19:35 performance.
