OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Bradley Suttle and Nick Peoples homered, and Chance Wheeless drove in four runs as top-seeded Texas tied the Big 12 tournament scoring record in a 19-10 win against Kansas State on Wednesday.
The Longhorns (43-13) scored 10 runs in the third inning to build an 11-4 lead and then sustained a six-run eighth inning by the Wildcats (33-23) by matching it in the bottom of the inning.
Wheeless had three of the Longhorns’ 17 hits and also scored three times, and Big 12 player of the year Kyle Russell drove in a pair of runs as Texas matched the tournament scoring record set by Oklahoma in a 19-17 win against Texas Tech on May 18, 1997.
Joseph Krebs (8-1) pitched five innings of scoreless relief to get the win.
Justin Murray (4-3) took the loss after giving up seven runs without retiring a batter in the third.
Nebraska 5, Texas A&M 3
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Adam Gerch drove in two runs, including the only one that came in as a result of a hit, and Nebraska slowly chipped away at Texas A&M in the Big 12 tournament opener.
All eight of the Cornhuskers’ hits were singles, and Nebraska scored three of its runs on sacrifice flies and another on a balk to defeat the fifth-seeded Aggies (41-16).
After D.J. Belfonte reached on a bunt single and Craig Corriston was hit by a pitch, Gerch singled to center to give the fourth-seeded Cornhuskers (30-23) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Jake Opitz, Corriston and Gerch added sacrifice flies to stretch the lead to 4-2.
The Aggies got within one run on Craig Stinson’s sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Nebraska’s Matt Foust struck out Blake Stouffer with the bases loaded to end the eighth inning.
Tony Watson (6-4) gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings for Nebraska, and Foust pitched the rest of the game for his seventh save.
Aggies starter Clayton Ehlert (1-1) gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings.
