MARBLE FALLS — The Brownwood Lions needed an extra session, but came away with a season-opening 48-45 overtime road victory against the Marble Falls Mustangs Friday night.

The Lions (1-0) outscored Marble Falls, 8-5, in overtime after the Mustangs tied the game with a three-pointer as time expired.

“This was a good learning experience for us,” said Lions head coach Shane Perkins. “It was pretty loud in there after they hit that three at the buzzer and they had all the momentum. But our kids came out strong and played with a lot of intensity in overtime.”

Leading 18-14 at halftime, the Lions fell behind 31-28 heading into the fourth period.

“We started off shooting pretty good in the third quarter and got the lead up to eight points,” Perkins said. “But sometimes when you’re shooting good you forget to get back and play defense and that’s what happened to us.”

Marble Falls’ 17-point third period was the only quarter in which the Mustangs scored more than nine points.

“Marble Falls is patient and likes to play games in the 40s,” Perkins said. “They hold the ball on offense and don’t attack the basket a lot. Defensively, they played a zone and we hadn’t seen that much in our scrimmages. We just didn’t shoot the ball real well.”

Rashad Deal and Kevin Cunningham led the Lions with nine points each. Deal converted 4-of-4 free throws in overtime.

Russell Foy added eight points, followed by seven from Parker Taylor, six from Kenny Vaccaro, five from Mike Thompson, three from Ike Huestis and one point from Cody Clements.
