The Bangs Dragons avoided consecutive losses, but needed an extra session to do so.
In their only game during Friday’s first-day action at the Underwood’s Christmas Classic, the Dragons fended off the Brady Bulldogs, 54-49, in overtime.
Bangs (11-2), which opened the season with 10 wins in its first 11 games, rebounded from its District 6-2A opening loss to Ballinger on Dec. 21 with the victory.
The Dragons were led by 16 points from Joey Lewis, who tallied 14 after intermission. Adrian Brown chipped in 14 points, while Bradley Lee added a dozen.
Also scoring for Bangs were Justin Kyle with six points, Justin Greenhaw with five points and Chase Henderson with one point.
Two Bulldogs finished in double figures, led by Zach Jones’ 14 points. Tyler Campbell contributed 12 points.
Bangs scored eight of the final 10 points in overtime to rally for the victory. Lewis recorded seven of the Dragons’ 11 points in the extra session.
Lewis’ deuce with 2:15 left put Bangs in front 48-47, then Brown added a free throw and a traditional three-point play to give the Dragons a 52-49 lead with 30 seconds left.
Lewis then iced the victory with a pair of free throws in the final seven seconds.
Bangs trailed 24-19 at halftime, but scored the first six points of the second half and led by four points after three periods, 34-30, thanks to a three-pointer from Kyle with nine seconds left in the stanza.
The Dragons’ largest lead was a 41-35 cushion with 4:20 left in regulation, but Bangs was outscored 8-2 down the stretch, which included a 4:17 dry spell.
Greenhaw converted two free throws with three seconds left in regulation to force the extra session.
Today, the Dragons will tangle with Snyder at 2:30 p.m. at Brownwood High School and Goldthwaite at 8 p.m. at the Brownwood Coliseum.
