GRANBURY — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions dual tennis match scheduled to take place against Granbury here Wednesday turned into a “doubles only scrimmage,” according to Brownwood head tennis coach Dave Cunha.

All members of the Brownwood roster played three matches and at least two were with a different partner.

“This time of year we’re still trying to find the best combination of doubles teams that will give us the best chance to win,” Cunha said. “Doubles is so important because every dual match starts with the seven doubles matches (three boys, three girls and one mixed) and it’s crucial to get off to a good start to have a chance when singles start.

“I was able to get some good ideas for future doubles teams from this match.”

Luis Vallecillo was the lone Brownwood player to compete on three winning teams, while Will Thomas, Gabe Cardenas, Steven Pinkard, Ryan Hembree and Andrea Leonard were twice members of winning teams.

Overall, Brownwood won 10 of 21 matches with a pair of ties.

The Lions and Lady Lions will open play in the Waco tournament today.
