Both the Early Longhorns and the Bangs Dragons had nine players selected to the 6-2A all-district baseball team, which was released earlier this week.

Three Longhorns were on the first team, four made the second team and two more were honorable mention choices. Meanwhile, the Dragons earned one superlative award, four first-team spots, one second-team selection and three received honorable mention.

Bangs sophomore pitcher Caleb Stone joined Jim Ned sophomore Tye Hodges as the district’s co-newcomers of the year. Landon McCall — one of a dozen sophomores honored — and coach Mark Howell of Grape Creek were voted the district’s MVP and coach of the year, respectively.

Despite missing the playoffs for the first time in the program’s history, Bangs still led 6-2A with four first-team choices. Pitcher Buck Nelson, catcher Caleb Gamblin, infielder Tyler Truitt and outfielder Tyler Roberts — all seniors — received first-team status.

Meanwhile, the trio of Longhorns chosen for the first team were sophomore pitcher Cale Bearden, sophomore infielder Bob Atchley and senior outfielder Taylor Singleton.

Early tied Coleman with a district-high four second-team selections. Earning a roster spot for the Longhorns were junior pitcher Cody Thompson, junior designated hitter Mitchell Bailey, sophomore infielder Jonathan Conley and senior outfielder Stephen Hopkins.

Bangs’ lone second-team choice was senior infielder Jarred Mason.

Honorable mention selections from Early were seniors John Atchley and Cody Blythe, while Bangs was represented by senior Cutter Hargrove and juniors Justin Greenhaw and Nic Carruth.

Early (14-14, 8-6) and Bangs (15-9, 8-6), along with Coleman (16-6, 8-6), all tied for second place in 6-2A behind district champion Grape Creek (17-9, 11-3). The Longhorns defeated Bangs, 10-4, in a postseason mini-tournament to oust the Dragons from postseason contention. Coleman then knocked off Early, 12-7, to relegate the Longhorns to the third seed.

Grape Creek was knocked out of the playoffs in the regional quarterfinlals round last week, which concluded the season for 6-2A. Early dropped its bi-district series to Coahoma the first weekend in May.
