Bulletin Staff Report

Brownwood High School head football coach Steve Freeman was recently named the 2008 High School Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Sports Officials.

“Several years ago, TASO-Football decided to recognize a high school and college football coach each year,” said J. Lynn Lawhon, president of TASO-Football. “These individuals have not only distinguished themselves in the game of football, but have also demonstrated a positive attitude toward and fostered the relationship between themselves and football officials.

“This year, it was indeed our pleasure to honor coach Steve Freeman of Brownwood High School in the high school division.”

Freeman owns a career coaching record of 112-55 and is entering his 12th season as head coach of the Lions and 14th year overall in Brownwood. Freeman has coached the Lions to the playoffs in nine of his previous 11 seasons and has posted an 87-44 record as the Brownwood head coach.

This season, the Lions will be competing in Class 3A for the first time since 1979. With 12 lettermen returning - including six offensive and two defensive starters - the Lions have been projected to compete for their eighth state championship by several preseason prognosticators.
