The Brownwood Astros never held the lead in their TTAB Junior Midgets state tournament opener at the Camp Bowie Sports Complex until they left the field Monday night - but that’s when it counts.
The Astros scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to stun the Malakoff Brewers and advance in the winner’s bracket. The Astros will face the Brownwood Cardinals at 9 tonight in a game pitting two of the final four undefeated squads against each other in the 10-team tournament.
Ricky De La Rosa raced home to score the winning run on a wild pitch during Caydon Vara’s one-out at-bat.
Trailing 6-4 when the bottom of the sixth began, the Astros’ comeback started with a solo home run to right field by Caleb Hernandez.
Stetson Bomar followed with an infield single, then advanced to second base when the throw sailed into the dugout. Bomar later moved to third base on a wild pitch during the at-bat of De La Rosa, who eventually walked.
With runners on second and third, Bomar pulled the Astros within a run when he scored on a wild pitch. De La Rosa failed to move to third base on the play, but did so after the next pitch. One toss later, De La Rosa scored the deciding run.
Malakoff took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Caleb Meine and Kennedy, who both walked, scored on wild pitches.
The Astros drew even at 2-all in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Ruben Vasquez that plated Xavier Porter, and an RBI ground out by Hernandez that brought home Vasquez.
Malakoff regained a 4-2 lead in the top of the second inning as Jayden Walden recorded a two-out, two-RBI double that scored Cody Stone and Meine.
Brownwood closed the gap to 4-3 in the third as Tyler Mills reached on an error and scored on error after he stole third base.
The Brewers responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Mills’ RBI ground out scored Vara and cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
