GATESVILLE — The Brownwood Lady Lions earned the most impressive victory of head coach Heather Hohertz’s first season Tuesday night as they destroyed previously state-ranked Gatesville, 57-27, in Gatesville tournament action.

The Lady Lions, who improved to 12-6 with their fourth straight win, did not allow Gatesville — which peaked at No. 19 in the Class 3A rankings — more than nine points in any quarter.

Brownwood jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one period and owned a 34-13 edge at halftime. The Lady Lions increased their advantage to 46-18 after three quarters of play.

“Our defensive effort was the best it’s been all season,” said Hohertz, who stated before the season that defense would be the key in the Lady Lions’ attempt to make their first postseason trip. “All night long the ‘D’ was sharp.”

Patricia Wilson and Hannah Mask both finished in double figures with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Sydnie Darden added eight points, Trinity Ansons chipped in five, Sara Byrd and Kelsey Gober tallied four points each, Mallorie Maxwell and Tiara Brown contributed three points apiece and Amanda Gober scored one point.

Byrd led the Lady Lions with 10 rebounds, followed by seven boards from Kelsey Gober. Ansons, Wilson and Mask each recorded four steals.

Brownwood will face either Mexia or McGregor at 4:30 p.m. today.
