The Bangs Dragons were denied a clean sweep of their abbreviated Underwood’s Christmas Classic schedule Tuesday as they dropped a 39-28 decision to Class 3A Snyder.
Bangs — which played just two games due to having its District 8-2A opener at Comanche slated for Friday — scored 10 of the final 12 points, but that was not enough to overcome the offensive struggles of the game’s first 28-plus minutes.
Josh Simons and Clay Brim led the Dragons with eight points each, followed by four from Marcus Smith, three from Doug Drury, two points each from John Fincher and D.J. Rios and one point from Isaac Brown.
Dominic Cabrera paced Snyder with 14 points, while Dakota Carroll added 10.
Bangs converted just one field goal in the first two quarters, and hit 5-of-11 free throws as it trailed Snyder by a 15-7 count at halftime.
The Dragons cut the deficit to 15-11 at the 6:54 mark of the third period on back-to-back buckets from Simons.
Snyder answered with an 11-1 run that stretched its advantage to 26-12 with 3:40 left in the period.
Snyder’s run featured three three-pointers, two from Jared Cave and one from Cabrera, and a bucket by Carroll.
Bangs trailed 27-15 after three quarters and was down 37-18 with 3:27 left before making its biggest surge of the game.
The Dragons tallied 10 straight points to cut the deficit to 37-28 with 40 seconds remaining.
Smith started the run, Brim added a bucket and Drury drilled a three to make the score 37-25. Simons then sank a free throw and Brim tacked on another deuce to cap the run.
