The first Friday of football practice brought with it the first full-pad workouts for the Brownwood Lions.

Slipping on the pads for the first time always seems to add a spring to the players’ step after a grueling opening week — and few, if any, have been more grueling than this week’s workouts during the summer-long stifling heat wave.

“I think there was a jump in intensity today,” said Lions third-year head coach Bob Shipley. “We didn’t really have any highlights in particular, but it was fun seeing some actual full  speed blocking and tackling again.”

The Lions will officially conclude their first week of action with an intrasquad scrimmage at 7:40 a.m. today.

Through the first week of practice, the offensive line and a few bumps and bruises have drawn the attention of the Lions head coach.

“Our offensive line is still a jigsaw puzzle,” Shipley said. “We’ve had three or four guys with some nagging injuries, so we haven’t been able to get a good  look yet at those guys.”

The Lions will spend the early portion on next week’s practices further developing the offense and defense.

“We’ll keep working against our offense and defense and won’t do anything until a couple of days before the scrimmage to run against Eastland’s  schemes,” Shipley said.

Brownwood’s first scrimmage of the season has been moved to Friday, Aug. 12 at Eastland, with the varsity slated to hit the field at 6:30 p.m.

“We’ll have our own little scrimmage in the morning so we haven’t even thought about a scrimmage against anyone else yet,” Shipley said. “I’m sure our guys will be ready to hit someone else when the time comes for the scrimmage.”
