Lady Cats set records, individual champs at powerlifting Regionals

BALLINGER– The Ballinger Lady Powerlifters traveled to Mertzon, Texas to compete in the Division 3 Region 1 Championships. The Lady Cat lifters placed second out of 46 schools represented. Leading the way with a total of 1,055 pounds in the 198-pound division was Rebecca Simpson, with first place and Regional Champ. Rebecca broke and set the record for all three lifts in her weight class with a 455-pound squat, 200-pound bench and 400-pound deadlift. She was Top Deadlifter for the Heavy platforms. She is the first Ballinger High School girl to deadlift 400 pounds.

First Place and Regional Champ along with Top lifter in the Light-division with a total of 1,050 pounds in the 148-pound class was Angelica Fuentes. Angelica also broke and set the records for all three lifts with a 465-pound squat, 225-pound bench and 360-pound deadlift. Angelica and Rebecca are the first two BHS girls to break 400-pound squat and 450-pound squat and 200 plus bench press.

Madison Watkins set a personal record total of 795 pound in the 165-pound class with a second place standing at Regionals. Tiana Sanchez placed fourth in the 105-pound class with a total of 580 pounds.

Kaylin King was unable to finish competition but has gained valuable experience for next year to come. Rebecca, Angelica, Tiana, and Madison all qualified for State competition to be held in Corpus Christi March 14.

“I’m pleased to be coaching such fierce and hard working girls that are not afraid to put in the effort of becoming better at their craft,” said Ballinger High School Powerlifting Coach Tremaine Johnson.

Next up for the powerlifting team is the boys Regionals, to be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 9 a.m. in Sundown, Texas.
