Flanagans named Family of the Year
Tractor Supply gets AgriBusiness of the Year at the 2014 Runnels County Ag Day
BALLINGER– The family of Scott and Mylea Flanagan was named Farm Family of the Year, Tractor Supply received AgriBusiness of the Year honors, while each one of Jessica Kalina and Brylee Matschek were awarded with the Pat Lee scholarship Tuesday afternoon, at the 2014 Runnels County AgriPlex Ag Day sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Southern Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Association.
This year’s Farm Family of the Year award honors the Flanagans, both of them Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. The award was presented by the Glenn and Diane Halfmann family, recipients of the 2012 award.
The Flanagans moved in 2006 to Scott’s great-grandfather’s farm near Ballinger, and began a flock of 150 purebred Southdown ewes.
Scott is the President of the Texas Southdown Breeders Association and member of the American Southdown Breeders Board of Directors.
They also created one of the largest animal hospitals in this area at Southside Animal Clinic in San Angelo. The state-of-the-art facility features the latest equipment and numerous veterinarians in a 24-hour emergency clinic.
Scott and Mylea have four children. They have served as club managers for the Ballinger 4-H Club, leaders for projects including sheep, goats, consumer decision making, “skillathons,” judging teams, and are members of the Runnels County Youth Advisory Board.
Tractor Supply was awarded AgriBusiness of the Year for the year 2014. The store was recognized for its “commitment to be the most dependable supplier of basic maintenance products to farm, ranch and rural customers.”
The Ballinger store, currently with a staff of 12, opened in 2010 to bring a wide array of farm and ranch equipment to local and area customers, as well as livestock supplies, clothing and livestock feeds.
The award was presented by First National Bank of Ballinger President Greg W. Schwertner as 2012 recipient, to Tractor Supply Store Manager Shaine Myers.
“Tractor Supply believes in supporting our local youth and communities, they contribute to area stock shows, support many academic programs at local schools and sponsor AgriLife Extension programs,” Schwertner said.
“Tractor Supply provides the noon buyers meal for around 500 participants at the Runnels County Junior Livestock Show, as well as donating products and support to numerous youth organizations across the country,” he added.
The store also helped with the Running for Runnels 5K held last year to help support the Runnels County Senior Citizens Center and Runnels County 4-H.
The Pat Lee scholarship was presented to Miles High School student Jessica Kalina and to Ballinger High School student Brylee Matschek.
