Tonya Bloomer will be featured at the Brownwood Art Association's First Thursday show, this week. Admission is free and guests will have an opportunity to purchase original works, as well as prints.

The Brownwood Art Association will feature another area artist at this week's First Thursday.

The Brownwood Art Center hosts a different artist the first Thursday of each month, with pieces of their work displayed prominently for guests. The shows include refreshments, an opportunity to visit with the artist, and to purchase original artwork.

This month's featured artist is Tonya Bloomer. She said she was approached by BAA members, whom she had had met outside of the association, about a year ago, to have a show at the center. At the time she wasn't ready.

"I always put it aside," Bloomer said, "because it's a lot of work to do frames and things."

"I've recently been blessed with things like that," she added, "so I said, sure I'll do it."

Bloomer will display about 30 pieces in frames, Thursday evening, and will have another 20 or so available. All her work will be available for purchase that night, as will a number of prints.

Bloomer said she has been doing art since she was about eight-years old.

"I was originally inspired by my older brother," she said, "He would draw comic strips and things like that and I had to be like him."

Bloomer works in oils, watercolors, and Sharpies, with subjects consisting mostly cowboys and horses.

"Oils are my favorite," Bloomer said, "and I really enjoy western things."

She added that she does paintings of rodeo, as well.

"There's a lot of action and I enjoy drawing that," she said.

Bloomer grew up in the Houston area, so she was never really around the types of things she enjoys drawing, but said she does hope to own a ranch someday.

She left Houston, for Ashland, Oregon, where she studied at the Ashland Academy of Art. Bloomer is now a senior at Howard Payne University, graduating with a degree in social work in December.

The Brownwood Art Center will be open from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, and is located at 215 Fisk Ave. For more information on the Brownwood Art Association or the Art Center, visit their website at, email, or their Facebook page.
