A Brownwood man is in the Brown County Jail on three Brady warrants for criminal negligent homicide in connection with a triple fatality accident on April 22, 2014 near Brady.

Early police officer Andre Smoot arrested John Martinez Jr., 26, on Sunday in Early on the criminal negligent homicide warrants and on a fourth warrant for possession of a controlled substance, Brown County Jail records state.

Martinez remained jailed Monday in lieu of bonds totaling $100,000, jail records state.

Martinez was driving a pickup north on U.S. Highway 377 12 miles north of Brady when it crossed the highway’s center strip and collided with a southbound Chevrolet Suburban that was occupied by a Brady family, Department of Public Safety trooper Kody Eckert said after the accident.

A woman and two of her children in the Suburban were killed in the accident.

Martinez and a passenger in Martinez’s pickup, Adrian Martinez, also of Brownwood, were both seriously injured. The two men are not related, Eckert said.

The Brady Standard-Herald reported that fire and rescue crews from Brady, Placid, Rochelle and Brownwood assisted in multiple extrications of the passengers of both vehicles. Due to the severity of the damage to both vehicles, rescue crews worked for more than one hour to get all of the victims out of the vehicles, the Brady paper reported, and victims were transported to Shannon Medical Center and Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Two helicopters also responded.

Firefighters from Brown County departments including Winchell, Brownwood and Brady responded to assist Brady and McCulloch County first responders.
