Lorena Hernandez, the wife of former Brownwood pastor Fernando Hernandez, was arrested Thursday on a charge of tampering with a child witness involved in a sexual abuse case against her husband.

Lorena Hernandez, 49, remained in the Brown County Jail Friday in lieu of $50,000 bond, jail records state.

Fernando Hernandez, 51, was indicted in October on a charge of sexual abuse of a young child or children. He is free on bond but under house arrest and required to wear an ankle monitor, court documents state.

Fernando Hernandez, who previously was the pastor of It’s A Challenge Church, has a Jan. 27 trial date.

According to a probably cause affidavit filed by Texas Ranger Jason Shea in Precinct 1 Doug Hurt’s office:

Shea was contacted on Nov. 18 by First Assistant District Attorney Elisha Bird about a possible witness tampering. Shea was told that a child witness was being “intimidated by Lorena Hernandez” not to testify in the upcoming trial of Fernando Hernandez, Shea’s affidavit states.

Shea was told Lorena Hernandez allegedly told the child she knew everything the child was telling the district attorney’s office and that Hernandez “had eyes and ears all round the courthouse,” Shea’s affidavit states. Hernandez said everything the child had told the district attorney’s office was a lie, according to the affidavit.

The child said Hernandez scared her and she was at the point of not wanting to tell the district attorney’s office anything else, Shea’s affidavit states.

The child said she believed Hernandez was trying to scare her so she would not testify in Fernando Hernandez’s trial, the affidavit states.
