Man struck girlfriend with bookshelf in domestic dispute

A Brownwood man remained jailed Thursday in connection with a domestic disturbance that happened Tuesday in the 4200 block of Seventh Street, Brown County Jail and Brownwood police records state.

Benjamin Smith, 40, was booked on a charge of continuous violence against the family, jail records state. Smith’s bond was set at $10,000.

According to an email from Brownwood police:

Officers were dispatched at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to the Fourth Street residence, where they met with a male suspect and female victim.

Officers observed obvious signs of a physical confrontation. Further investigation revealed this dating couple were arguing for several days and it culminated in the female wanting to leave. The argument became physical when the male suspect threw a foot-long bookshelf at the female, striking her in the back of the head and neck, police said.

The suspect, identified as Smith, was initially arrested for domestic violence assault. A criminal history check revealed a previous arrest for the same offense within a 12-month time frame. For this reason, Smith was charged with continuous violence against the family, police said.

Smith was transported to the Brown County Jail and released to jail staff without incident.
