COVID nixes Lions’ next two football games
Brownwood ISD announced Wednesday, Oct. 7, that it will cancel its next two varsity football games due to a player testing positive for COVID-19.
The games against Midlothian Heritage and Waco La Vega are both district contests. Brownwood was already coming off a loss to Stephenville in last week's district opener.
All football-related activities are shut down until those quarantined are allowed to return to campus, a BISD release said. The district plans to resume Oct. 19.
Unless the Lions are able to reschedule the two games, Brownwood will be 0-3 in district and will likely have to win its two remaining games against Alvarado and Waxahachie Life to sneak into the playoffs as the fourth and final seed.
District 5-4A Division I has a bye during Week 11, when one of the games could be made up. Phone calls to Brownwood coach Sammy Burnett on Wednesday morning were not immediately returned.
The Lions player tested positive on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and was last on campus Friday, Oct. 2, according to a release from BISD.
"We are working with the Brownwood Health Department to identify and notify anyone who may have had close contact with the student. Remote instruction plans for those students will be put into action while they are off-campus," the release stated.
