EARLY — Early school board members unanimously chose Wes Beck, former Early High School principal and currently superintendent of the Shamrock school district, as the lone finalist for the Early school superintendent's job during a specially called meeting Tuesday.

There were 40 applicants for the job, and board members initially interviewed seven. When they entered a closed session late Tuesday afternoon, the board had narrowed the field to three including Beck and conducted a second round of interviews with the trio.

After interviewing the candidates, board members reconvened into open session and voted to name Beck as the lone finalist.

By law, the board must wait 21 days to officially offer Beck the job. Beck's start date in Early is expected to be July 7, board president Shawn Russell said.

Beck has been superintendent in Shamrock — a district with just over 300 students on Interstate 40 near the Oklahoma border — since 2007, Russell said. He was principal at Early High School from 2003-2007 and worked in Stephenville from 1980 to 2003 as a teacher and assistant principal.

"He is a man of integrity," Russell said. "He has great knowledge about school business and finance. He does have seven years experience as superintendent.

"He brings passion and loyalty back to Early, Texas."

Russell said Beck had bonded well with students and faculty when he was principal at Early High School. "He made a big impression when he was here on our students and our faculty," Russell said. "We are lucky he's going to be our next superintendent."

Russell said the district's site-based committee, consisting of faculty, staff, community leaders and business leaders, narrowed the initial 40 candidates to 12. The district considered criteria including leadership, community involvement, approachability and loyalty, Russell said.

"We're glad for the Early ISD to have a superintendent and chief executive officer in place," Russell said.

Also Tuesday, board members approved the district's assistant band director, Rob Chapleau, as band director. Chapleau has been with the Early district for three years and replaces Jason Jones, who resigned to become band director in Burnet.
