A head-on collision just inside the Mills County line on U.S. Highway 84 Wednesday morning claimed the lives of both drivers.

The Department of Public Safety identified the victims as Maria Martineau, 46, of Austin, who died at the scene, and Matthew Harrison, 35, of Ballinger, who died at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

The accident happened at 7:34 a.m. one mile south of the Brown/Mills County line, and eight miles north of Mullin, the DPS said.

Martineau was driving a 2005 Ford 500 north, and Harrison was driving a 2007 Toyota Tundra south, the DPS said. The Ford crossed into oncoming traffic, and the driver of the pickup tried to take evasive action, moving onto the highway's shoulder. The collision happened on the paved shoulder.

Accident investigators don't know what caused the Ford to cross the highway into incoming traffic, and the accident remains under investigation, the DPS said.
