Central Texas Opportunities, Inc., Head Start lost their Federal Grant

Penny Graves of Comanche

Being a member of the Board of Directors for the Central Texas Opportunities, Inc., Head Start, I was very sad to hear at 5 p.m. on May 28, that we had lost our Federal Grant.

This Federal Grant was for three 3 million dollars and the money was divided between seven 7 counties for their Head Start Programs.

By not receiving this Federal Grant it means that the Comanche Head Start will have to close. This means that the children that went this year and were planning on coming back next year have no where to go. This is not only hard on the children; it is also hard on the parents. Many of these parents have no means to send their child anywhere else.

The closing of the Head Start Programs will affect about 150 employees as well as 20 to 40 children at each center and their parents.

It has been proven that the children who have gone to Head Start do better in school. A lot of them even become honor graduates.

Judy West, one ofthe employees of the Comanche Head Start said “This is a great loss to these children and their parents.”

This three 3 million dollar loss will affect the following counties as their Head Start Programs will be closed alsoo The counties of Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, McCulloch and Runnels.

This is money that all of these counties will miss from their revenue, due to the fact that no purchases will be made in these counties for the Head Start Program.

I feel that ever citizen should write their Senator, Representative, Governor and President and tell them we need our Head Start Program back. This is an important part of our education program as well as the economic impact for these counties. As rural areas of Texas we need this revenue. We need this in order to help a number of our lower income homes try to work their way out of poverty. ,

I would like to tell the people who worked at the Comanche and De Leon Head Start classrooms a big THANK YOU. I would also like to tell the people at the other centers Thank You also. The love, patience and care you gave each child will not be forgotten.

It has been my pleasure to serve on the Policy Council and the Board of Directors for Comanche County, Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. Head Start. I have learned a lot about how the Head Start Program works as well as the many other programs connected to the Central Texas Opportunities, Inc.

I will be writing my Congressman and hope you will do the same to say we need the Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. Head Start Program back.
