Lions baseball splits first two at Llano Hill Country Classic

LLANO — The Brownwood Lions snapped a three-game skid with a 9-4 victory over Wimberley in Thursday’s opener at the Hill Country Classic, but the San Angelo Central JV chalked up an 8-0 victory over the Lions in their second game.

In Thursday’s win over Wimberley, the Lions snapped a 4-all tie with a pair runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cojo Guidry walked and Trent Carlton reached on an error to ignite the rally, then Justin Osteen moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

Hayden Day then came through with a two-RBI double to right field that plated both Guidry and Carlton and pushed the Lions back in front.

Brownwood tacked on three insurance runs — all with two outs — in the bottom of the sixth.

After the first two batters were retired, Elijah Salazar and Kory Owen both walked, then Guidry reached on an error at first base, where the throw was in time but the ball was dropped, to load the sacks.

Carlton then lashed a two-RBI single to left field to score Salazar and Owen, and Osteen followed with an RBI single that brought home Guidry.

Osteen also went the distance on the mound to earn the victory, yielding six with hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.

In the loss to the Central JV, Brownwood surrendered one run apiece in the first and second innings, three runs in the third, and three more in the fifth inning.

Kory Owen started on the mound for Brownwood and was tagged with the loss.

The Lions (5-9) are scheduled to face District 8-3A rival Liberty Hill at 11 a.m. today and Taylor at 10 a.m. Saturday in their final two games at the event.
