The Brownwood High tennis team earned five medals — one gold, two silver and a pair of bronze — while hosting the Brownwood Invitational Thursday.

In the mixed doubles ‘A’ final, Brownwood’s Delaney Bennett and Joaquin Alonzo knocked off teammates Lindsey Williams and Matthew Bryant.

To reach the finals, Bennett and Alonzo defeated twosomes from San Angelo Lake View and Sweetwater, while Williams and Bryant toppled teams from Graham and Alvarado.

Also Thursday, Lion Mark Johnson experienced defeat for the first time in 39 matches this school year, falling to defending Class 2A state champion Reese Cook of Jim Ned (7-5, 6-1) in the boys ‘A’ singles championship match.

Johnson (38-1), who received a first-round bye, still earned a silver medal as he defeated Trevor Spencer of Lake View (6-0, 6-1) and Miguel Alvarez of Alvarado (6-0, 6-1) to reach the final.

In girls ‘A’ singles action, Lady Lion Brittney Blake came in third, defeating Amber Longworthy of Graham, 6-4, 6-4.

Blake won her opener over Gewel Cherry of Sweetwater but dropped her second match to Connie Hernandez of Lake View.

In girls ‘A’ doubles action, Rosie Cadena and Karina Garcia finished third in the five-team round-robin format, posting a 2-2 record. The Lady Lion tandem knocked off teams from Graham and San Angelo Lake View.

Timothy Sheehan and Casey Shannon came in fourth in the boys ‘A’ doubles draw, winning their first match over a duo from Sweetwater followed by setbacks to tandems from Alvarado and Lake View.

Also in boys ‘A’ singles competition, Zach Hall tallied two wins before falling to Cook, while Zak Blake collected one win prior to being defeated by Alvarez.

The two Lions then worked their way through the consolation bracket and advanced to the final, which will be played between the teammates at a later date.
