Dragons, Longhorns start 6-2A baseball schedule with victories

BANGS — The defending 6-2A champion Bangs Dragons opened district baseball action with a 7-3 home victory over Coleman Friday night.

The Dragons (5-5, 1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a pair of two-run innings in the first and second, then tacked on two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Coleman scored twice in the fourth inning and added a sixth-inning run.

Bangs collected eight hits, led by three from Tanner Shaw and one apiece by Chane Burton, J.T. Newton, Daniel Malett, Chance Beck and Brady Glover. Newton, Malett, Shaw, Beck and Chuy Alvarado notched RBIs for the Dragons.

On the mound, Glover tossed five innings of five-hit ball to earn the win, allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts and five walks. Newton pitched the final two innings of relief, racking up four strikeouts with one walk.


Longhorns 18, Grape Creek 0

EARLY — The Early Longhorns opened District 6-2A baseball action Friday with their fourth straight win in a 18-0 blowout against Grape Creek.

The Longhorns (7-2-1, 1-0) produced one run in the first inning, three in second, six in the third and eight more in the fourth inning.

Early tallied a dozen hits, drew six walks and capitalized on seven Grape Creek errors.

Nick Alcorta recorded a team-high three hits for the Longhorns trailed by two each from J.W. Ledbetter, Abel Hernandez and Jake Fisher. Kellan Jackson, Stephen Hlis and Christopher Johnston added one hit apiece.

Ledbetter, Johnston, Hernandez and Fisher notched two RBIs each, while Jared Crouch, Tres Underwood, Alcorta, Jackson and Hlis contributed one RBI apiece.

On the mound, Jackson worked four innings and allowed two hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks to collect the victory. Alcorta pitched the fifth inning and struck out the side in order.
