Lady Lions softball captures ninth, 10th victories in tournament action

GRAHAM — The Brownwood Lady Lions softball team improved to 10-3 on the season Friday, defeating Mineral Wells by a 9-7 count followed by a 13-6 victory over Springtown at the Tri-County tournament.

In the win over Mineral Wells, the Lady Lions chalked up 21 base hits.

Leading the Brownwood assault was Alyson Finnigan, who finished 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Other offensive standouts included Kristen Fuentes, who was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs; Victoria Sanchez and Shelbi Winstead, who both went 3-for-4 with an RBI; Ashley Gomez, who finished 2-for-5 with a triple; and Ashley Jones, who was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

In the circle, Finnigan pitched all seven innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Against Springtown, the Lady Lions pounded out 12 more hits.

Fuentes led the offensive attack with a 4-for-4 effort that included a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Gomez finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Jones was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Alexis Larrea and Gomez split time in the circle in the nightcap. Larrea worked three innings and surrendered three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Gomez tossed four innings and yielded one unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Lady Lions will wrap up tournament action today as they face Abilene Wylie at 10 a.m. and Iowa Park at noon. Brownwood defeated Wylie, 10-0, this past Tuesday.
