Lions baseball falls to No. 9 Liberty Hill, 11-7, in district preview


LLANO — In a preview of District 8-3A baseball action, the Brownwood Lions ran out of time in their bid to rally past the Liberty Hill Panthers.

Liberty Hill, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A by, held on for an 11-7 victory over the Lions during Friday’s second day of the Llano Hill Country Classic.

The Lions (5-10) faced an 11-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, where they struck for five runs before the time limit ended the contest.

With one out in the sixth, Pablo Salazar singled over third base, then Cojo Guidry was hit by a pitch and Rawlings Rios slapped a single up the middle to load the bases. Kory Owen followed with a fly ball to right field that was dropped, which scored Salazar, and an errant throw afterward allowed Guidry to race home.

Still down seven runs, Seth Owen stepped to the plate and ripped a two-RBI triple that closed the gap to 11-6. Carson Cloy followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to reduce the deficit to four runs, but Liberty Hill retired the next batter to preserve the victory.

The Lions surrendered two runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third to fall into a 9-0 hole before tallying their first two runs in the bottom of the third. Liberty Hill tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth.

In the Brownwood bottom of the third, both Kory Owen and Seth Owen were hit by pitches. Elijah Salazar later drilled a two-RBI double to deep center field- to plate both runners.

Brownwood will wrap up play in the Hill Country Classic at noon today against Taylor.
