Lions, Lady Lions both in first place following first day of Bluebonnet Relays
At the conclusion of Friday’s first day of the Bluebonnet Relays, both the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions found themselves in first place in the Class 3A varsity division.
The Lions generated 46 points in field events and the two-mile run, which left them with a slim edge over Graham and Mineral Wells, which both garnered 44 points Friday.
Meanwhile, the Lady Lions amassed 30 points followed by Midland Christian with 27 and Lubbock Estacado with 22.
Brownwood won a combined three events Friday and came in second in three more.
Earning gold medals for the Lady Lions were Victoria Henry (39-4.5) in the shot put and Jessica Romero (12:07.65) in the 3200 meters, while Dylan Person collected one in the boys 3200 meters (10:41.2) — the first event of the day.
Placing second were Henry (105-1) in the discus on the girls side, Hayden Day (131-0) in the discus on the boys side and Connor Howard (20-1.75) in the boys long jump.
The lone third place effort Friday belonged to Lady Lion Sharday Melvin (16-0.25) in the long jump. Melvin also placed fourth in the triple jump (33-6.5).
The Lions finished fourth in five events — Tristan Duque (5-8) in the high jump, Bryan Johnson (19-4) in the long jump, Rosavelt Duffie (38-6.75) in the triple jump, Devante Stredic (45-2.75) in the shot put and Mackey Gibson (129-0) in the discus.
McKenzie Cox turned in a fifth-place performance in the girls high jump (4-10) while Stredic came in sixth in the boys discus (125-2).
Running finals begin at noon today at Gordon Wood Stadium and will be conducted in the following order — 4x100 relay, 800 meters, 100-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles, 100 meters, 4x200 relay, 400 meters, 300-meter hurdles, 200 meters, 1600 meters, 4x400 relay.
