Lady Lions’ five-run fifth dooms Venus in 6-1 triumph

VENUS — The Brownwood Lady Lions claimed victory in their final outing before the start of district competition as they picked up a 6-1 road win over Venus Tuesday night.

The Lady Lions (12-4) tallied five runs in the top of the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie.

Kayla McFarden, Ashley Gomez and Danyelle Gongora all singled to start the inning. McFarden later scored on an error and Gomez came home on a passed ball to push Brownwood in front, 3-1.

Finnigan then walked to put two runners on base for Ashley Jones, who cranked a three-run homer to right field, which capped the scoring.

Brownwood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Kristen Fuentes led off with a walk and scored on a two-out RBI single by Tori Burkett.

Venus (4-9) pulled even in the third inning.

The Lady Lions finished with nine hits — two each by Burkett and Shelbi Winstead and one by Gomez, Gongora, Fuentes, Jones and McFarden.

Gomez pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Finnigan worked the last two innings, yielding one hit with six strikeouts.

The Lady Lions open District 6-2A softball action at 7 p.m. Friday as they host Burnet (12-5).
