Last-place Llano stuns Lady Lions softball, 3-1

LLANO — The Brownwood Lady Lions mustered just four hits as the Llano Lady Jackets stunned first-year head coach Jessica Lynn’s squad, 3-1, Friday for their first District 8-3A softball victory of the season.

The Lady Lions (15-6, 3-2) had recorded 17 runs in their last two outings — including an upset of state-ranked Lampasas — but tallied their lone run against Llano (11-12, 1-4) in the top of the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Shelbi Winstead singled with one out, followed by a base hit from Tori Burkett. Kayla McFarden was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Still with one out, Ashley Gomez drove in Winstead with an RBI ground out before the threat was quashed.

Ashley Jones singled in the second inning, and McFarden did the same in the third to account for Brownwood’s other two hits off Llano hurler Angela Jackson, who struck out four.

Llano scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first off Gomez, who struck out four and walked five.

Courtney Mize and Lacey Redden led off the first with back-to-back walks ahead of an RBI single by Sydney Hicks. Brenna Owens then walked to load the bases before Jackson picked up an RBI on the fourth free pass of the inning issued by Gomez. Christy Vassar drove in the final run for Llano on an RBI sacrifice fly.

Brownwood will begin the second half of District 8-3A action at 7 p.m. Friday at Burnet.
