Lions, Lady Lions test mettle against state's elite at Texas Relays

AUSTIN — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions fell short in their Friday bids to advance to the finals of their respective events at the 87th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, but still put forth solid efforts.

Two-time state qualifier Lexie Lewis led the way with an 11th place effort of 12.27 in the High School Division II (Class 3A and smaller) girls 100 meters, while the Lady Lions mile relay team of Ebonie Adams, Lewis, LaKisha Anthony and Sharday Melvin was 15th with a time of 4:07.82.

The Lady Lions 4x200 relay team of Adams, Melvin, Anthony and Lewis (1:47.57) came in 21st, while the Lions 4x200 team of Chevy Robertson, Joe Zapata, Kaimon Ontiveros and Bruce Sterling (1:32.34) was 22nd.

Victoria Henry, who also appeared at state last year, came in 24th in the discus with a best effort of 112-10, while the Lions 4x400 relay team of Robertson, Colt Garrett, Ontiveros and Bryan Johnson placed 35th with a time of 3:37.44.

Brownwood will conclude action at the Texas Relays today with Henry competing in the shot put, and the Lions 4x100 relay team battling in the Division II boys preliminaries.

On Thursday, Dylan Person, who also advanced to the state meet last season, finished seventh in the steeplechase with a time of 6:41.24.
