LLANO — After erasing a two-run deficit to pull even in the top of the sixth inning, the Brownwood Lions surrendered three runs in the bottom of the frame to remain winless in District 8-3A baseball action with a 5-2 loss to the Llano Yellow Jackets.

Llano (3-1 in district) began the sixth with a leadoff single by Holden Simpson off Justin Osteen, who went the distance and yielded six hits with six strikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Chance Ware then beat out a bunt to put a pair of runners on with no outs.

With one out and runners on second and third, Llano became the third straight team to successfully execute a late-inning suicide squeeze to put the Lions (6-15, 0-4) in a hole. Tommy Yelvington dropped down the bunt that plated Simpson with the go-ahead run, then Eli Tiffin and Logan Bauer tacked on consecutive insurance RBI singles.

Trailing 2-0 after four innings, the Lions cut Llano’s lead in half in the top of the fifth. Carson McAnally singled to left-center field to start the inning, then moved to third base on a single by Rawlings Rios. Hayden Day followed with an RBI single to right field, but Rios was thrown out at third base to extinguish Brownwood’s fire.

The Lions drew even in the top of the sixth as Osteen was hit by a pitch, then Tristan Chesser delivered a two-out RBI single to left-center field that plated Tyler Jackson, running for Osteen.

The Lions will close the first half of 8-3A action at Burnet at 7 p.m. Friday.
