The Brownwood Lady Lions — (from left) district champion Sydney Roberts, Audrey McKillip, Krista Fragua, Sidney Ivey, Kylee McCoy and head coach Laura Martin — will compete at the Region I-4A tournament in Lubbock April 13-14.

STEPHENVILLE — The Brownwood Lady Lions shaved 34 strokes off their opening round score to earn a Region I-4A tournament team berth, and Sydney Roberts extended a two-stroke edge through 18 holes into a comfortable 14-shot district championship victory as the 36-hole 6-4A girls golf tournament concluded Monday at Legends Golf Club.

Roberts, the defending regional champion, followed an opening round 83 on March 25 at Abilene's Diamondback Golf Club with a 71 Monday — a 12-stroke improvement — for a composite score of 154. Runner-up Scarlett Eaton of Mineral Wells finished just two strokes better than her first-round tally with an 83 Monday, giving her a final total of 168.

"Sydney played great golf today," said Lady Lions head golf coach Laura Martin. "She was very steady all day."

The Lady Lions, who trailed Abilene Wylie by one stroke for second place after the first round, topped the Lady Bulldogs by nine strokes Monday to lock up 6-4A's second regional berth, behind district champion Graham.

"I am just so excited for the girls," Martin said. "They've played great all year. I'm so proud and looking forward to Lubbock."

The Lady Lions posted a 396 Monday compared to Wylie's 405, and Brownwood's opening 430 at Diamondback. Along with Roberts' closing 71, Krista Fragua carded a 104, Audrey McKillip added a 106, Sidney Ivey finished with a 115 and Kylee McCoy contributed a 119.

For the tournament, McKillip finished with a 211 trailed by Fragua with a 224, Ivey with a 237 and McCoy with a 246.

District champion Graham finished with a 36-hole team total of 752 on the strength of rounds of 391 and 361. Comprising the Lady Blues squad were Ashley Choate (90-81=171), Madison Farmer (93-82=175), Abbi Iles (92-95=187), Maggie Nunley (119-103=222) and Kennedy Hays (116-114=230).

Eaton of Mineral Wells and Abilene Wylie's Bailie Brown (88-100=188) advanced as medalists, as the top two teams and top two individuals not on those squads earn regional berths.

The Region I-4A girls golf tournament will take place April 13-14 at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, where Roberts won the regional championship tournament last season and finished first at a regional preview event earlier this spring.
