Dragons, Lady Dragons earn District 7-3A track and field championships

EARLY — The Bangs Dragons and Lady Dragons captured District 7-3A track and field championships by narrow margins Thursday, and will send a combined 36 entries to the 7-3A/8-3A area meet in Clyde next week.

The Early Lady Horns placed third in the final team standings while the Longhorns finished fourth as the district hosts will combine to send 30 entrants to area, slated for April 16.

The Dragons amassed 185 points, edging out runner-up Brady (175), Coleman (121), Early (102) and Comanche (19). Meanwhile, the Lady Dragons rallied to defeat Brady in the 4x400 relay — the final race — to generate 162 points, while Brady was second with 156. Early racked up 116 points followed by Coleman with 107 and Comanche with 72.

The Bangs boys will also be sending the largest contingent to the area meet, earning 19 slots in the field. The top four finishers in each district event move on to area, and the top four finishers in Clyde next Thursday will advance to the Region I-3A meet at Abilene Christian University May 1-2.

Competing as district champions for the Dragons will be Nick Sterling in the long jump (21-2.25), triple jump (40-3) and 110-meter hurdles (15.36), Timothy Hall in the 3200 meters (11:01.36) and 1600 meters (5:02.92), Brian Sterling in the discus (152-10), Keegan Hall in the shot put (48-8.5), Dylan Bostick in the 800 meters (2:05.7) and Trett Mitchell in the 300-meter hurdles (41.45).

Advancing as district runners-up are Bostick in the 1600 meters (5:03.67), Josh San Juan in the discus (132-11), Cody Sellars in the 100 meters (11.28), Kaden Ferguson in the 110-meter hurdles (16.73) and the 4x400 relay team (3:28.26).

Third-place qualifiers include Mitchell in the pole vault (9-6), Bryan Makuta in the high jump (6-0), the 4x100 relay (44.19) and the 4x200 relay (1:35.54). Nick Sterling also punched his ticket in the high jump (6-0) with a fourth-place effort.

The Lady Dragons will occupy 17 positions at area as district champions competing will include Alex Madlock in the long jump (18-5.5), triple jump (35-9.25) and 100 meters (12.36), Karen Parks in the shot put (31-7.5), the 4x100 relay (50.91), the 4x200 relay (1:47.24) and the 4x400 relay (4:12.5).

District runners-up include Parks in the discus (93-6), Cassie Carmichael in the shot put (31-2) and Callie Sprowls in the 200 meters (27.3).

Earning area berths with third-place performances were Ryli Pruitt in the pole vault (8-6) and Michael Light in the high jump (4-8).

Meanwhile, fourth-place qualifiers include Christin Cooper in the 3200 meters (13:12.8) and 1600 meters (5:58.67), Abbey Ivey in the discus (91-4), Light in the 800 meters (2:33.21) and Pruitt in the 100 meters (13.39).

The Lady Horns are sending 15 entrants to Clyde, include a trio of district champions — Sharday Melvin in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.16) and 300-meter hurdles (46.96) and Tuesdi Tidwell in the pole vault (11-3).

Melvin also qualified in the long jump (16-3.5) and triple jump (34-1) by placing second in both events.

Moving on after third-place efforts are Tidwell in the long jump (16-3.25) and 200 meters (27.82), Jayslin King in the long jump (16-0.5) and 100-meter hurdles (16.91), Lauren Jesko in the shot put (29-6.75) and the 4x100 relay (52.99).

Also advancing after placing fourth are K.K. Whitley in the shot put (29-6.75), Parker Smith in the 200 meters (28.0), the 4x200 relay (1:53.28) and the 4x400 relay (4:31.41).

Like the girls, the Longhorns also claimed 15 area berths, but the boys did not finish first in any event at district.

Coming in second were Abel Hernandez in the long jump (20-8.25) and 400 meters (51.89), Logan Thomas in the pole vault (10-0) and Hayden Turner in the 200 meters (23.27)

Finishing third were Landon Beck in the shot put (41-2), Nick Alcorta in the long jump (20-2) and Jack Donahoe in the 3200 meters (11:26.46).

Placing fourth were Thomas in the 110-meter hurdles (16.92) and 300-meter hurdles (43.28), Ryan Hill in the 800 meters (2:11.83) and 400 meters (54.18), Riley Mitchell in the shot put (40-5), the 4x100 relay (44.84), the 4x200 relay (1:36.8) and the 4x400 relay (3:42.29).
