Former Brownwood Lion Mark Johnson, a member of the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders tennis team, was named ASC West Division Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending April 5.

Johnson, a freshman at UMHB, finished third in boys singles at the Class 3A state tennis tournament during his senior season at Brownwood. He posted a 56-3 singles record last spring to conclude his high school career.

Johnson did not lose a set in his return to Brownwood on April 3 as the Crusaders topped Howard Payne, 9-0. Johnson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles over Marshall McIntosh, then teamed with Brendan Thompson for an 8-1 victory over Yellow Jackets McIntosh and Mitchell Sostarich at No. 2 doubles.

On Friday, in UMHB’s 8-1 non-conference win over Austin College, Johnson tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jacob Morgan in No. 3 singles and combined with Thompson for a 8-4 triumph over David Smith and Daniel Oxenreiter in No. 2 doubles.

Johnson marks the third Crusader to earn the player of the week honor, which has been bestowed upon UMHB (8-2, 2-0 in ASC) five times this spring. Crusaders Jake Stamps and Scott Wilding are two-time winners of the award.
